Diamond Certification

A diamond certificate also called a diamond grading report, diamond dossier®, or diamond quality document is a report that is created by a team of appraisers who are trained gemologists.  The certificate report tells you, the consumer, information about the diamond you are purchasing. Information that is included in the report is the 4C's of the diamond—the cut of the diamond, the color of the diamond, the clarity of the diamond, and the carat weight of the diamond.  In addition, the report will also tell you about the dimensions of the diamond, the polish of the diamond and the symmetry of the diamond.  The way the appraiser evaluates your diamond is by scrutinizing it using a various industry tools some of which include a microscope and a jeweler's loupe.

Today a third-party company certifies your diamonds.  The purpose to certifying diamonds is to make sure that you, the consumer, are getting what you are paying for.  Before certification became the norm in the diamond industry, there was no unified standard for grading diamonds.  Take for example a diamond that was given a grading by one gemologist as a J SI1.  Another gemologist could give the exact same diamond a grading of an H VS1.  So today third party companies such as GIA (Gemological Institute of America), AGS (American Gem Society), EGL (European Gemological Laboratory), and IGI (International Gemological Institute) certify the diamonds, precious and semi-precious stones that you purchase.

Here at Avital and Co., located in the heart of the world famous Diamond District in New York City (NYC), every piece of jewelry sold for $1,500 to $2,000 will come with a certificate of authenticity stating the appraised value of the item, the type of metal used as well as carat weight and the quality of diamonds. Pieces of jewelry that are sold for $2000 and above will come with a free appraisal certificate from an independent gemological laboratory.  Both of these documents can be used for insurance purposes in case of theft or loose.  Since the prices of diamonds, precious gemstones, and precious metal tend to fluctuate, these documents will insure that you will not receive less than the original price that you purchased your treasured piece of jewelry.
