Gold Education

When people think about purchasing a beautiful piece of jewelry, the first precious metal that they think of is gold.  Renowned for its gleaming luster and denseness, gold is the softest and most pliable natural metal of all of the precious metals.  Gold is also resistant to corrosion, rust, and tarnish.  When considering using gold in the setting of your jewelry, Avital & Co., located in the heart of the world famous Diamond District in New York City (NYC), recommends looking at two considerations. The first is which gold carat to choose and the second consideration is the color of gold to use.

Gold Purity

The carat or karat  (symbol:or kt) is a unit of purity (percentage metal alloys) for all gold alloys and is expressed in 24ths, making 24k gold 100% gold. Below is a table that lists the purity carat weight of gold:

24k

100% gold

Too soft for fine jewelry

22k

91.7% gold

Too soft for fine jewelry

18k

75.0% gold

Ideal for fine jewelry

14k

58.3% gold

Ideal for fine jewelry

10k

41.7% gold

Perfect for fine jewelry

When thinking about which carat of gold to purchase for your piece of jewelry, remember that 18k and 14k gold holds up better than 10k gold to everyday wear and tear. For this reason, 18k & 14k gold tends to be the primary choice for diamond engagement rings, diamond wedding bands, and diamond eternity bands.10k gold is more suitable for earrings, studs, pendants, necklaces, chains and bracelets. Avital & Co., located in the heart of the world famous Diamond District in New York City (NYC), all of our diamond and semi-precious jewelry such as engagement rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, studs, pendants, are crafted into incredible and beautiful pieces of timeless art for every occasion imaginable using only the finest gold available.  As our logo says, if you can imagine it, we’ll create it since 1957.

Gold Color

Gold jewelry settings are made in three colors of gold—yellow gold, rose gold, white gold, and white gold with black rhodium.

Yellow Gold

The first color, which is gold in its purist form of being bright yellow, is mixed with an alloy of silver with a green hue, copper with a red hue, nickel, and zinc to make it more resistant to everyday wear and tear. This mixture is what gives this precious metal its unique look of warmth. The purity for gold is the same as all of the other color gold..

Rose Gold

Rose gold jewelry is made using a mixture of pure gold with other alloys such as copper and silver, which gives it an elegant pink hue. The purity for rose gold is the same as all of the other color gold.

White Gold

White gold jewelry is made using a mixture of gold and other white metals such as palladium, nickel, manganese, or silver.  In addition to being made with these metals, white gold is plated with a hard element called rhodium (a platinum group metal) which gives white gold a reflective appearance.  Although rhodium is one of the hardest elements, it will wear away over time due to wear and tear and here at Avital & Co., located in the heart of the world famous Diamond District in New York City (NYC), we will restore your fine white gold jewelry back to its pristine condition. The purity for white gold is the same as all of the other color gold.

White Gold with Black Rhodium

White gold jewelry that is plated with black rhodium will have an appearance of a dark finish verses a reflective finish.  Like white gold jewelry that is plated with rhodium, it will wear away over time due to wear and tear and here at Avital & Co., located in the heart of the world famous Diamond District in New York City (NYC), we will restore your fine white gold jewelry that is plated with black rhodium back to its pristine condition. The purity for white gold that is plated with black rhodium is the same as all of the other color gold.

Maintaining Your Precious Gold Jewelry

Now that you own a precious piece of gold jewelry, how do you take care of it?  Well, since gold is a natural element, it is affected various chemicals and daily living.  Avital & Co., located in the heart of the world famous Diamond District in New York City (NYC), recommends the following step in order to have your timeless piece of jewelry maintain its original warmth and beauty:

·        Remove all gold jewelry when showering or bathing. The exposure to soap and chemicals can dull the gold, necessitating more frequent cleanings.

·      Remove all gold jewelry when swimming or using a hot tub. Chlorine is gold’s natural enemy and can permanently discolor your beautiful piece of jewelry.

·      Remove all gold jewelry when cleaning around your home.  Exposure to various harsh household chemicals such as acids and abrasives  can damage the finish of your beautiful diamond engagement ring setting and weaken your jewelry.  In addition, although gold is lasting and  durable it can be scratched and/or dented if treated roughly.

·     Properly storing your gold jewelry is just as important as cleaning.  When you are not wearing your precious gold jewelry, keep it in the  original box it came in or if you do not have that, wrap it in a soft cloth.  Finally, store all of your jewelry separately so that it does not get    tangled or scratched.

·        Inspect your gold jewelry for any signs of wear and tear.  Pay special attention to the prongs in your diamond engagement ring.  Make sure  that they are not bent or loose.  Make sure that the clasps in your necklaces, chains, and bracelets catch easy but are still secure.  Look at  the links in your gold, platinum, and silver jewelry to make sure that they do not kink or bend.  If you find that your jewelry could use some  loving care and attention, email Avital & Co. at customerservice@Avitalandco.com or call us at 212-764-6851 to set up an appointment to  have all repairs and restorations done.

·        To clean your gold jewelry at home, you can use a solution of warm water and detergent-free soap with a soft-bristled brush and dry with a chamois or soft cloth to avoid scratches and bring out its shine. However, Avital & Co., located in the heart of the world famous Diamond District in New York City (NYC), recommends that your bring your jewelry in every 6-12 months to have your jewelry inspected for lose stones or any damages and have it professionally ultrasonically cleaned and steamed. This service is provided to all of Avital & Co. customers free of charge. To learn about other beneficial services we offer, become our customer.
