Oval-Cut Diamond

Created in the 1960's by Lazare Kaplan, nephew of the famous diamond cutter Abraham Tolkowsky, the oval-cut diamond is an elongated version of the round brilliant-cut diamond, elliptical in shape and possessing an old world sophistication.  Like the round brilliant cut diamond, the oval-cut diamond usually has 58 facets but can be cut with anywhere from 4, 6 or 8 pavilion facets to enhance the diamond's brilliance. The oval-cut diamond is a perfect choice for someone who is looking for the brilliance and fire of the round brilliant-cut diamond but wants something that looks different and gives the illusion that the diamond, when being viewed face up, has more carat weight than other shapes. For example, a two-carat oval-cut diamond will appear larger than a two carat round brilliant-cut diamond.  In addition, the oval-cut diamond, like the marquis-cut diamond, can make the finger of the wearer appear longer and slimmer.  Furthermore, the oval-cut diamond will look beautiful and elegant in other pieces of jewelry other than a diamond engagement ring such as diamond pendants, diamond necklaces, and diamond earrings.

When purchasing an oval-cut diamond, there is no rule of thumb, like a princess-cut or a marquis-cut diamond on how narrow or fat the oval-cut diamond should be; it is a matter of personal choice.  However, Avital and Co., located in the heart of the world famous Diamond District in New York City (NYC), suggests that you purchase an oval-cut diamond with a length-width ratio of 1.35-1.50 (the proportion of the diamond’s top to bottom measurement compared to side-to-side) which is considered a classic oval-cut.  In addition, when purchasing an oval-cut diamond, make sure that the “bow-tie effect” (a dark space in the center of the stone that will inhibit light from reflecting through the diamond) is minimized.
