Marquise-Cut Diamond

The marquise-cut diamond, also known as “navette” or “little boat” in French, is shaped to look like the hull of a boat.  Believed to be commissioned by King Louis XIV of France, who was inspired by the smile of the Marquise de Pompadour, the marquis-cut diamond has an elongated oval shape with two pointed ends and a facet arrangement in the crown and pavilion that echoes the beauty of the round brilliant-cut.  The marquise- cut diamond is chosen by women who want to make their fingers look elongated and slim and to maximize the visual size of the diamond because it has one of the largest crown surface areas of any diamond shape.

The marquise diamond typically has 58 facets, like the round brilliant-cut, but can be cut with 4, 6, or 8 facets in its pavilion facets.  When choosing your marquise-cut diamond, Avital and Co., located in the heart of the world famous Diamond District in New York City (NYC), recommends choosing a diamond for a length to width ratio between 1.75 and 2.25.  The reason for this recommendation is that there is a possibility that the diamond will exhibit a dark space in the center of the stone that will inhibit light from reflecting through the diamond. This is called the “bow- tie” effect.  When properly cut, the marquise-cut diamond should reflect light on all sides without any “bow ties.”

Avital and Co., located in the heart of the world famous Diamond District in New York City (NYC), recommends a prong type setting to protect the two points of the diamond when choosing a marquis-cut diamond.  Since diamonds are formed by the Earth's crust, many of them will have flaws and or blemishes in them (Diamond Clarity).  With a marquise-cut diamond, the two points of the diamond was once nearest the outer edge of the rough stone. Therefore, if there are blemishes or inclusions in the diamond, these flaws can be noticed here in the diamond.  Thus, setting the diamond with a prong setting can mask these flaws.  In addition, a prong setting will protect the two points of the diamond from chipping.
