Platinum Education

When thinking of a metal that is hypoallergenic, platinum is your choice.  Four times stronger than gold, platinum is preferred for its incredible strength, longevity, its substantial heft and its ability to resist tarnish and every daywear.  Since platinum is a very heavy and dense metal, a platinum diamond engagement ring will fill heavier than an 18k gold diamond engagement ring.  Its silvery white luster conveys an air of elegance and aristocracy.  It is extremely rare and in fact 30 times more so than gold.

Platinum Purity

Considered one of the hardest and purest metals to work with, the most common alloy metals paired with platinum are iridium, titanium, palladium, and copper to make it more malleable.  Therefore, platinum jewelry pieces are marked based on parts per thousand of pure platinum metal.  The most typical platinum designations are:

850 Plat or Pt

(850/1000th's platinum)

85% pure platinum

900 Plat or Pt

(900/1000th's platinum)

90% pure platinum

950 Plat or Pt

(950/1000th's platinum)

95% pure platinum

Platinum, Plat or Pt

(at least 950/1000th's platinum)

95% platinum

At Avital & Co., located in the heart of the world famous Diamond District in New York City (NYC), all of our fine platinum jewelry pieces will be marked with either 950 purity Platinum (95% platinum) or 900 purity (90% platinum).

Platinum’s Patina

Although platinum is the strongest metal used to make jewelry, it can scratch and develop a patina wear.  This satin sheen develops on the surface of your jewelry from daily wear and scratches.  The patina look gives your jewelry a warm and comfortable look that can last for a lifetime.  Here at Avital & Co., located in the heart of the world famous Diamond District in New York City (NYC), if you prefer this look of comfort and warmth from the beginning, we can create this finish for you.

Care and Maintenance

To clean your platinum jewelry at home, you can use a solution of warm water and detergent-free soap with a soft-bristled brush and dry with a chamois or soft cloth to avoid scratches and bring out its shine.  However, Avital & Co., located in the heart of the world famous Diamond District in New York City (NYC), recommends that your bring your jewelry in every 6-12 months to have your jewelry inspected for lose stones or any damages and have it professionally ultrasonically cleaned and steamed.
