Pear Cut Diamond

The pear-shaped cut diamond is a modified version of the marquis-cut diamond and the oval-cut diamond.  Like the marquis-cut diamond the oval- cut diamond and the heart-shaped cut diamond, the pear- shaped cut diamond is also known as a modified brilliant-cut diamond.  Also called a teardrop shaped diamond, the pear-shaped cut diamond is so called for its single point and rounded end.  The pear-shaped-cut diamond is believed to have been created in 1400 by Lodewyk “Louis” van Berquem.

Since the pear-shaped cut diamond is a modified version of a round-brilliant cut diamond, it is usually cut to have 58 facets to bring out the fire, brilliance, and sparkle of the diamond.  A pear-shaped cut diamond appears larger per carat weight compared to other shape diamonds of equal quality.  For example, a 1.5ctw round-brilliant cut diamond will appear smaller than a 1.5ctw pear-shaped cut diamond.  In addition, similar to the marquis-cut diamond and the oval-cut diamond, the pear-shaped cut diamond will have a slimming effect on your finger.

When looking for a pear-shaped/tear-drop cut diamond for your center stone in your diamond engagement ring, Avital and Co., located in the heart of the world famous Diamond District in New York City (NYC), recommends purchasing a pear-shaped diamond with a length-to-width ratio between 1.45 and 1.75.  When setting a pear-shaped cut diamond, the tapered point of the tear-drop-shaped diamond should be pointing towards your hand and preferably in a prong-type setting to protect the tip of the teardrop cut diamond.  Even so, Avital and Co., located in the heart of the world famous Diamond District in New York City (NYC), can set a pear-shaped cut diamond any way you like while protecting the tip of the diamond.

When looking to purchase a pear-shaped cut diamond, issues to be aware of are the following:

       “Bow-tie” effect.

The rounded end of the pear-shaped cut diamond should be symmetrical and appear to look like a semi-circle.  If you drew a line down the center of the diamond, you should expect to see two visually similar  halves, but in some cases, one side protrudes more than the other does. This is often called “uneven  shoulders.”

The rounded end of the diamond does not flow as a natural curve. The pear-shaped diamond is also  known as a tear dropped diamond because the pear-shaped cut diamond is supposed to resemble a  “tear” that falls down your face.  A poorly cut pear-shaped cut diamond tip will appear to look as if it  dropped on the floor—the tip will be wide, blunt with a “rounded triangle” or a “squared off” appearance.

Because of its uniqueness, the teardrop shape/pear- shaped cut diamond is a popular choice for diamond earrings, diamond necklaces, and diamond pendants.  When choosing a pear-shaped cut diamond for these pieces of jewelry, the length-to-width ratio is a personal preference.
